Love by chance review
Hello everyone, I hope to find you good. Today I am here to talk about the last drama I've seen, which is Love by chance.
Love by chance is a thai drama and it has two seasons. I will analyze them separately.
Please note that there will be spoilers, but they would not ruin the vision of the drama if you didn’t watch it yet, since overall the plot is quite banal and predictable.
Regarding the first season. I actually liked it a lot. Yes, it can’t be denied that the plot is pretty basic, like the classic BL ff you can find on the internet. Nonetheless it’s still very enjoyable. I think that is especially thanks to Perth's (Ae’s actor) excellent acting work. He was very young when they filmed the first season, but he conveyed all the right feelings into Ae's character and the relationship between him and Pete.
It’s the perfect love between 18yo young men.
Of the main couple, I also liked that they emphasized the height difference of the two actors. We all know that, usually, in BLs there is this unwritten rule that everyone follows, that is the top being taller than the bottom. So I really liked that they didn't want to "hide" that Pete (the bottom) is indeed taller than Ae; also, they have a scene in which they focus on it. It's just a small detail I noticed and appreciated.
Regarding the drama in general, I liked that every character is shown to have a growth. Even if small, they still all have it by the end of the whole series.
Now I want to focus a little on the second season and the problems it brings [All infos come from random websites on the internet].
From what I understood, there was some kind of arguing between Saint and Perth ‘s managers (the main actors), so Saint (Pete actor) could not be present in the 2nd season.
At the same time, it also happens that in the novel Pete has to go study abroad out of his father’s request. Sadly this isn’t well represented in the 2nd season AT ALL. They just say that Pete broke up with Ae in order to help him. This is because, apparently from the novel, Pete’s father was troubling Ae’s family for not accepting that his son is gay. At the end they reunite when the father is dying. We know all this from the novel (which I didn’t read personally).
Gladly enough they managed to go on quite well also without Pete (I believe all thanks to Perth great ability to show his character's feelings); also the 2nd season focuses on the couple Tin/Can, so we see less of Ae anyway.
However, here comes a huge problem. THE TIMING IS ALL WRONG. I don't even know how to explain it, but I had a lot of trouble figuring out what was happening. We end the 1st season with Pete/Ae together and with Tin/Can confession. BUT, starting the 2nd season we have Pete/Ae not together anymore (for what I said above) and Tin/Can still bickering (in the same way it was DURING the 1st season).
It’s like they are in 2 different timelines. Also, for Tin/Can couple they took some dialogues from the first season and made them again.
I still don’t get why they couldn't just go on with the plot from the end of the first season also for Tin and Can. To resolve this issue I advise you to jump directly to the 7th episode of the 2nd season and simply jump the first six. In this way you can avoid free headache and continue with the right timing. You will only miss some of Ae's scenes in which he cries or drinks to endure the pain of his missing boyfriend.
Another very negative point of the 2nd season is that some characters are completely missing at one point and no one cares enough to explain why. Some examples are: the bully in 1st season, Pond and Ae’s friend who is missing in the 2nd season (he is replaced with a new character that no one knows and says why he is there). And then, where is Pond’s girlfriend? Mentioned just once.
Just how should we know who they are?
Now, talking about the characters. I already said that I enjoyed their growth both for the main couple, but also for the secondary ones.
Ae is a kind person. He loves his family, his friends and his lover with all his might. He’s always ready to help and never wants anything in return.
Pete is a Koon Chai as he’s defined by Ae, a young lord. He has always lived under the care of his mother and never experienced the normal basic things like taking a bus or eating at a school canteen. With Ae’s help he grows A LOT. But he is also very kindhearted and somehow a naive person. Most of the time, he doesn’t know how to say no.
Pond. I liked his character a lot. He’s the comic relief in the show. But he has a lot more than this and it shows later in the 1st season and beginning of the 2nd. He can be really nosy, but he truly cares for his friend and can give great advice if he wants to act serious. He is also truly worried about Ae's behavior after Pete is gone and suffers from his lack in helping Ae feeling better.
Can is very naive, and he knows. He trusts his friends and never questions what others say. Only Tin could put some questions in his mind that didn’t regard food or football. I didn't like that they emphasized A LOT that he is stupid (he says it literally multiple times in each episode). However he also has a growth, but it's better shown in the 2nd season.
Tin is a character with high potential which wasn’t developed to the fullest, in my opinion. I think his change is slow but consistent. However, they resolved the issues with his family too fast. But I appreciated a lot the change he passed thanks to love. He lost his sorrow of the past and he is a nicer person overall. He also becomes more patient and learns to wait for Can's time.
There are still 2 couples left. However they have so little screen time that I find it very difficult to analyze them properly.
Nonetheless I wanted to point out that Tar is a character with high potential. His past trauma could have brought the story to a darkest narration, but also a very realistic one. However the series is a light one and of course they kept the same flow for every couple and just mentioned it briefly, focusing only on the consequences that the past have on Tar behavior now.
Even if the ship with his brother is controversial, I would have liked to see his brother helping him in overcoming his trauma. Of course I was relieved to see that they don't end up together.
The last couple is the one I liked the least. Techno/Kla couple is a very slow one, all because of Techno. I can appreciate that Techno is confused and wants to understand what he feels, but we simply don't see it. We just see him avoiding Kla until the last 2 episodes of the 2nd season in which we have like the bare minimum they could give us.
Anyway this is my opinion. If someone watches it after that and would like to comment on it with me, you know where to find me (Ig, Twitter, Tumblr).
See you next time,
Ary
